DQ is amazing because of it's simplicity. The areas of its expertise are areas that other games have long forgotten about it would seem: basic fundamental gameplay. It cares more about having lots of variations of monsters in an area, or slowly changing the difficulty levels of monsters, or the pricing of the inns than it does about innovative battle systems and all that. In the latter Final Fantasy games it seems that gold, HP damage and levels are something almost encouraged not to think about (started in VII when characters not used would automatically level up along with characters used), and in Dragon Quest games when a Slime gives you 2 gold, that means you'll have to battle two more until you can go to the inn and recharge your HP, so you have to stay really close to the castle to battle the easier enemies to pass a level in order to be able to face off with enemies a little further away from the castle closer to the next town. The entire concept probably seems stupid to a person who got into RPGs only for the stories.
very smart post etc

post=88736post=88732The Paper Mario/Superstar Saga/Super Mario RPG's sports the most fun and entertaining gameplay of any RPG I've ever played. There's nothing you could possible dislike in those games!
The Paper Mario series and Super Mario RPG I don't like...
bzzzzzzzt
(that's the buzzer going off because you said something dumb)
Please never say "there's nothing you could possibly dislike" about any game ever, especially Mario RPG, which I've already brilliantly proven to be a sucky sucky game.
Also, I can't believe no one mentioned Mystic Quest! That game is garbage. But maybe I just hate that they put the words "final fantasy" in front of the game's name for no reason.
The Importance of Planning
If you have some insane CBS or custom system of some sort that needs ridiculous planning (ie for some reason you need to know all your character's spells beforehand etc) then it's trivially true that planning is important. If it's a question of story though, I mean, it's good to always jot down your good ideas but I personally have no problem coming up with all the details as I go along. I loathe people who plan every single map of their game in advance.

Well, I wouldn't think its thread hijacking to say WHY you feel a game is bad since it promotes actual discussion. I've never seen much FF fanboyism either from this place, so its good.
I dunno. I liked FF7. I can emphasize with everything you're saying, but I found it entertaining. The presentation was pretty cool to me. I liked Midgar, the slums, Shinra (and the concept of Shinra), the Turks, the atmosphere, the motorcycle chase, that sort of thing. It was just an entertaining ride if you just sort of clear your mind and just play without thinking too much into it.
Also, minor correction;Barret (if I remember correctly) all pretty much suck since their "ultimate" limit break is garbage) which is also a huge flaw)
Barret, along with Cid, Cloud, and Yuffie are among the top people in the game, because they have multi hit Limits which allow them to hit for 5000-9999 damage more than a dozen times or so.
Sorry, I thought Barret's was another "do 9999 damage to all enemies" limit break - I only have a vague memory of this because I never played with him in my party, but my brother did.

post=88636post=88517Why?
On that topic though I think FF7 is complete shit.
I'm not trying to give anyone a hard time, but I think discussion would be more interesting if we discussed WHY we don't like 'x game' instead of just saying 'X GAME IS SHIT' without any reasoning.
Also, I'm genuinely curious.
Again, so as not to hijack the thread I'll be very brief:
-incredibly silly, usually nonsensical story, mostly in the minor character-development related stuff but also some things in the main storyline (and I'm not just complaining about it being confusing, I'm genuinely complaining about it being really silly)
-badly written, sometimes unintelligible dialogue
-horribly ugly graphics that always seem awkward or out of place, and maps that are usually hellishly difficult to navigate (the second part is more important obviously..but then again I suppose you can just press select)
-very very very easy gameplay; apart from the super mega ultra bosses like Emerald weapon the game is unbelievably easy to breeze through and you pretty much never need to stop and level up.
-absolutely no uniqueness among the characters, so that they pretty much become nothing but slots for your materia (apart from the limit breaks, which make some characters clearly inferior to others (ie Cait Sith, Red XIII, Barret (if I remember correctly) all pretty much suck since their "ultimate" limit break is garbage) which is also a huge flaw)
-some other stuff I forgot.
I hope a mod splits this into a separate thread before things get stupid, since I know legions of Cloud fanboiz are going to be furious at this post

I liked Quest 64. The only thing that stopped it from being interesting was its lack of features, NPCs, sidequests, treasure hunting, interesting enemies. The core system, however, was solid, and I wish I could have been re-done with a longer dev-cycle to punch it up a bit.
The worst thing about Quest 64 was the fact that you never knew which direction you were supposed to be walking in after a fight was over. So stupid... how could the developers have not noticed such a glaring fuck up.
RPGManiac, this is a thread for the "worst game ever", not just any game you find bad. On that topic though I think FF7 is complete shit. I don't even think it's just overrated, I really think it's garbage and I think that most people who claim to like it only do so because a) they feel some loyalty to the earlier (ie: better) final fantasy games or b) because they'd never played an RPG before, and FF7 was probably the first commercial RPG. In any case, this can be a different thread of some un-enlightened RPG nerd feels like challenging me since I won't drag this one down too much.
Another candidate for the worst game ever I'd say is Pac Man 2: the new adventures for the SNES. Maybe I just didn't have enough patience but I found the whole 10 minutes of it that I played to be unbearable
Avantasia The Game
I'm just wondering if the version on the downloads page with the patch is the definitive version or if bugs still need to be fixed.
Worst. Game. Ever.
He never said why.
Why?
Because point and click exists and it is a far superior method of controlling shooters.
Hint: the part after he says "Why?" is where he says why.
